Ostentation & Style x Ben Sherman

It’s always interesting when an accessory changes your entire look. The beret is certainly one of those items, even though many have a love-hate outlook on it. I’ve always liked the concept of the beret and the aesthetic that it creates. But until recently, I had still kept this historically prominent item away from my wardrobe. The beret or a variation of it has been around for centuries. We can trace its popularity back to Basque shepherds of 19th century France, hence the French connection many people associate it with. There is also the military beret that first got its appearance from Alpine Troops in WWI.

While preparing this post, I realized I had yet to wear my Ben Sherman boot in any of my entries since the boots dropped. I want to send thanks to everyone that showed support and love since I started my blog, I appreciate you. It’s humbling to see people reaching out with a positive feedback. The British wardrobe Staples boot is also a great winter shoe. I’ve not talked about coat in a while. It’s a classic piece that I’m in love with because of the minor details present, especially in the back. I’ve taken quite the liking toward denim pants. They create a distinct look from regular trousers, especially when paired with a beret.

Park Slope is an affluent neighborhood in northwest Brooklyn, New York City. Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park West to the east, Fourth Avenue to the west, Flatbush Avenue to the north, and Prospect Expressway to the south. Working with Sasha Israel a Photographer who lives at park slope, the moment I arrived I felt the truth within the space. Sasha Israel is quite discerning when selecting creative locations you will see in our image. What I genuinely respect about her, she has a virtuous sense of imagination and try something new. It was great to work with her as she brought the city to life through his images.

A sophisticated crombie-style coat with a three-button closure and notch lapels is crafted from a dense wool blend in a tailored fit that covers you past the thighs.

Although I’ve looking at the beret as a menswear item, it’s a piece that is easily substitutable between the gentleman and ladies. It’s a hardly used piece among today’s young generation and bound to turn heads with skepticism as a result. That shouldn’t discourage you from finding a niche for it in your wardrobe.

Ben Sherman, once a brand dedicated entirely toward shirt clothing, is now one of the top go-to brands for the urban professional. The shirts were a huge success, offering something brand new and previously unseen in England. Interestingly it was exactly at this time that the first British youth culture was in full flow; the post war teddy boys. This movement had shown a new generation of youth that clothing could be a key indicator of their beliefs and signal their belonging to a culture or movement.

The feeling was that there simply had never been anything on the English scene like it. The Ben Sherman shirt was revolutionary and so was the ‘mod movement’. Through fashion and music, London and Britain were cool again, the swinging 60’s was in full flow and the atmosphere was europhic.

In general, the mission would be to actually wear in one of my raw denim jeans to the fading stages of these jeans. Since that wasn’t possible, these Ben Sherman Selvedge Jeans are in any Ben Sherman Store near you. They are a nice light wash which has allowed me to make a change versus the current denim selection in my wardrobe.
